1971 geboren in Wien, absolvierte von 2004-06 das Fotokolleg an der Höheren Graphischen Lehranstalt in Wien. Er arbeitet als selbständiger Fotograf in Wien und Niederösterreich. Neben seiner beruflichen und vorwiegend digitalen, fotografischen Tätigkeit konzentriert er sich seit mehr als 20 Jahren auf seine größte Leidenschaft: die klassische, analoge Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie.
Vor seiner fotografischen Laufbahn verbrachte Schmied mehrere Jahre im Ausland (USA, Schweiz, Schweden) und führte unter anderem zwei Jahre lang ein Wiener Kaffeehaus in Cincinnati, Ohio; er jobbte im In- und Ausland auch als Koch, Kellner, Barchef, Auto-Übersteller, Weihnachtsmann, Postkartenhändler, Bühnenarbeiter, Sportfotograf & Redakteur.

Rudolf Schmied was born in 1971 in Vienna. He lives close to Austria´s capital-city, in a small town called Kleinneusiedl. Rudolf got his first photocamera and started to enlarge black & white pictures in his own darkroom, when he was fifteen years old . Before concentrating on photography, he worked many different jobs in Austria, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA: he ran a Viennese coffeehouse in Cincinnati, Ohio; he worked as a show-cocktail-barkeeper in Kitzbühel, Austria and in Lucerne, Switzerland; he wrote articles for a local Austrian newspaper and took sportpics for a Viennese photo agency. He also built concert stages, started his own picture-postcard-company and worked as a driver for a car company. In the year 2000 Rudolf finally focused on photography and got educated at the college for photography in Vienna. After graduating from the two year-college, he started his own business and nowadays successfully works as a professional photographer.
Rudolf Schmied is still focused on his greatest passion: the analog black & white photography.

Rudolf Schmied verfolgt mit der analogen Fotografie seine persönliche Vision vom "Bildermachen". Leidenschaftlich, intensiv und hingebungsvoll setzt er sich mit speziellen Herstellungstechniken der Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie auseinander. "Jedes meiner Bilder ist Ausdruck meines Respekts und meiner selbstverordneten Verpflichtung dem Medium Fotografie gegenüber."
: personal statement
For me, analog black & white photography means both: fascination and therapy. In the last 25 years I spent days and nights in my darkroom and i´m still not tired of it. It is a place of meditation as well as an island full of surprises and self reflection. At the end of every process stands a very personal and unique piece of art. The black & white silver gelatin print finally and literally turns into gold. Every print is a sign of my personal respect and responsibility for photography. Every picture shows my view on the world and above all, reflects my personal vision of creating a picture.
